Project content:

The project „Smart Pölten“ is based on the preceding study „Smart&GreenLivingLab“ (FFG project 855516) and focusses consequently on creating social innovations with a broad «social impact».

These elements will be implemented on several locations as so-called “stepping-stones” based on an empowerment-based participative planning process with the citizens of St. Pölten. This aims to create experiences and communication opportunities within cooling urban islands in the whole city.

Via those actual installations spread over the whole city, St. Pölten is becoming an extensive Testbed. At the end of the project, based on the social innovations, citizens will be responsible for the maintenance and the development of those prototypical green and open spaces.

The outcome of this consequent bottom-up approach will be the development of green urban islands implementing the following elements:

  • mobile urban pocket gardening
  • concepts for an „eatable city“
  • green walls/green chattels
  • a climate-research-laboratory for Kids

The development of a model and the evaluation of the social impacts regarding the specific elements in the green and open spaces complete the approach of social science. The climate Monitoring will be generated by the children’s climate-research-laboratory, under consideration of the socially and sanitary relevant indicators.

The associations „Sonnenpark“ and „Smart Pölten“, which are operating as active project partners in the project, are going to provide the local network plus will play a fundamental part in ensuring the sustainability of the project.

The project-team is arranged interdisciplinary. Exchange and Knowledge-sharing with other Smart-Cities-projects are intended within the project as well as broad dissemination activities. Through this project, St. Pölten is going to strengthen its activities towards Smart City and will be an international example for green and social innovations with high and measurable social impact.

Green4Cities surveys the typologies of the existing urban structure and creates a potential analysis. That forms the basis for planning and implementation of the stepping-stones. In addition, Green4Cities does not only provide the conception, it is also engaged in the construction of prototypes, which are developed and built in cooperation with citizens and partners.

This project is funded by the Climate and Energy Fund and is carried out under the program “Smart Cities Demo”

Project duration: 2018/01 – 2020/06
