First GREENPASS® GOLD certificate goes to a Viennese housing project FLAIR

Premiere at Vienna’s 6th StadtGRÜNgespräche: The GREENPASS® GOLD certification was awarded for the first time during the specialist conference organized by Vienna’s department of environmental protection, MA 22. The winner was a joint residential project by GREEN4CITIES and FLAIR Bauträger GmbH in Vienna Atzgersdorf.

This international award is further proof that, with the right green wall technology and specific green space design, it is possible not only to save costs, but also to provide the highest level of thermal comfort in residential buildings.


Innovative climate simulation eliminates hot spots

On the initiative of Vienna’s environmental protection department, the developers involved GREEN4CITIES experts in the project. Using ENVI-met, a holistic, numeric 3D simulation model, the experts examined the real estate project for so-called hot spots and complemented the conventional planning process with two simulation steps.

In the first step, the team developed a cost-effective and resource-conserving landscape plan for the project in accordance with UMA-architects and the developers wishes on the 6,000-square-meter area. This first lanscape design and architecture was then tested by ENVI-met microclimate simulation software together with three standard reference variants. The reference variants differed only in their share of green infrastructure, from maximum greening to complete sealing. The outdoor environment chosen simulated a hot summer day.


Acid test: sunny midsummer day

Measurement variables were thermal comfort for the open space on a micro-climate level; passive flood protection; investment in green infrastructure, water, and building physics as well the investment level. As a result, the micro-climatic performance was defined; the water retention was calculated; and a cost/benefit analysis was generated. This allowed the experts to clearly identify the hot spots and the optimization potential for each planning variant. The optimized variant was then run again through a simulation and the GREENPASS® technology. The results were then evaluated with reference to the performance of the standard scenarios and, after meeting the criteria, certified with GREENPASS® GOLD.

This result shows that including green and blue infrastructure ensures climate-resilient urban planning in a simple and cost-effective manner. The thermal comfort and quality of life for residents in urban spaces can thus be increased significantly. This also supports biodiversity and habitat quality. Moreover, it is an important contribution to preventing the creation of urban heat islands in times of urban growth and climate change.

The construction of this innovative residential project is planned to start in spring 2017.
